The Switzerland of Africa

This past weekend Barry, Jared and I went down to Kisoro, a town in the southwest corner of Uganda, to hike up a volcano in Mgahinga National Park. To get there we had to drive through and area that has been dubbed The Switzerland of Africa. The drive took forever (3 hours to cover a mere 50 miles) but was well worth it just for the views. The dirt road between Kabale and Kisoro winds through mountainside after mountainside covered in lush terraced farming. Then you drive through a big rainforest thick with trees. This forest preserve is a remnant of what the entire area once looked like. Neither my words nor my pictures could ever do this area justice: you'd just have to see it yourself Then, after passing through the reserve, you come back into terraced farming and can see the three volcanoes, and within an hour you finally reach Kisoro. How Barry described the area: "I think when Winston Churchill called Uganda 'The Pearl of Africa,' this is what he was talking about."
